5 Firefox Plugins for Faculty

1. IE View: Lets you load pages in IE with a single right-click, or mark certain sites to always load in IE. Useful for incompatible pages, or cross-browser testing. This extension is very useful for viewing web sites that don’t load properly in Firefox, or require IE only. Note, however, that it is not available for the Mac version of Firefox. – THERE SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH FIREFOX 3.6

2. Diigo Toolbar : This extension is perfect for the instructor on-the-go, or anyone who uses multiple workstations throughout the day. It augments the bookmark functionality in Firefox and integrates it with the Diigo service, allowing you to tag and save your bookmarks in the browser, search them in real time, and access them from any computer at any time. It will even import and tag your exhibiting bookmarks and place them on your Diigo account.

Features:

  • Add persistent highlights and sticky notes on any webpage
  • Save your bookmarks and cache bookmarked pages on the web so you can access them anywhere, anytime
  • Organize and search your bookmarks by tags and lists, and by full-text search
  • Share your bookmarks with friends and groups, and through twitter, facebook, etc
  • Enable you to connect with people who have bookmarked the same page or site
  • Easily publish your bookmarks and annotations to blogs

3. Zotero: Zotero is a research tool for Firefox that allows you to gather, organize, and analyze sources from the web and easily share them, like del.icio.us. It will automatically capture citation information from the sites you save, keeping them in a “playlist” style organization tree. Zotero comes with the ability to integrate directly with your blog, Microsoft Word, or Open Office.

Features:

  • Automatic capture of citation information from web pages
  • Storage of PDFs, files, images, links, and whole web pages
  • Flexible notetaking with autosave
  • Fast, as-you-type search through your materials
  • Playlist-like library organization, including saved searches (smart collections) and tags
  • Platform for new forms of digital research that can be extended with other web tools and services
  • Formatted citation export (style list to grow rapidly)
  • Integration with Microsoft Word and OpenOffice.org

4. PDF Download Manager: The perfect PDF handler for an instructor who constantly uses Blackboard Vista. Instead of waiting for Adobe Acrobat to load up inside the browser, PDF Download pops-up and offers you choices such as downloading, opening, or converting it straight to HTML. It is easy to use, and helps reduce the number of times your browser locks up or crashes.

Features:

  • View PDF online (NEW). Convert PDF to an image and display it in the browser for quick viewing.
  • Convert Web pages to PDF. Convert any (unsecured) Web pages to great looking PDF files, and then save, share, print or archive them.
  • View PDF as HTML. View the contents of PDF files faster and eliminate browser problems by instantly converting any Web-based PDF to a browser-friendly HTML Web page.
  • Control PDF files in Firefox. Stop crashes and get the upper hand on Web-based PDF files by automating and controlling how your Firefox or Flock browsers deal with them.
  • Works in your language. Through the help of our users, PDF Download is now available in 19 languages and counting.

5. TabMix Plus: The ideal solution for those who enjoy using multiple tabs, but need more control or have the problem of accidently closing important tabs that are often in use. Protected tabs can’t be closed accidentally no matter what you click (even actions like “Close other tabs” will not affect them) and will stick around between sessions.

Features:

  • duplicating tabs
  • controlling tab focus
  • tab clicking options
  • undo closed tabs and windows
